Our HISTORY

What Is Utility Engineering?

"Utility Engineering is a branch of Civil Engineering that focuses on the planning, position, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and asset management of any and all utility systems, as well as the interaction between utility infrastructure and other civil infrastructure.”

What Is ENgineering Surveying?

"Engineering surveying are those activities involved in the planning and execution of surveys for the development, design, construction, operation and maintenance of civil and other engineered projects. Engineering surveying may be regarded as a specialty within the broader professional practice of engineering and includes all surveying activities required to support the conception, planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of engineered projects. Engineering surveying excludes the surveying of real property, for the establishment of land boundaries, rights of way, easements, and the dependent or independent surveys or resurveys of the public land survey system. ASCE believes that this definition should be adopted by state engineering licensing boards.”

UESI focuses on five subsects of utilities and surveying:

  • Pipelines - Advanced pipeline engineering, relative to conveyance of liquids, gases, and solids via pipelines.

  • Utility Risk Management – Hosting discussions on utility investigations, coordination, design, data management, and security.

  • Surveying and Geomatics - Providing leadership for the acquisition and management of spatial data while encouraging the advancement of geomatics.

  • Asset Management - Sharing knowledge related to the holistic life-cycle asset management of utility infrastructure.

  • Standards - Identifying new topics for standards development and growing the overall UESI standards program.

UESI provides its members with various activities to support their professional and technical growth:

  • Technical conferences – Pipelines and the Surveying & Geomatics Conferences

  • Involvement in Technical Committees and UESI Chapters

  • Development of Standards

  • Continuing education

  • Organizational membership

Who should join?

  • Water and Wastewater Pipeline Engineers and Suppliers

  • Oil and Gas Pipeline Engineers

  • Electrical and Communications System Designers

  • Utility Asset Managers

  • Utility Coordinators

  • Surveyors

  • Subsurface Utility Engineers

  • Everyone interested in the local utility engineering and surveying industry!

For the communities of Miami-Dade County, a local chapter was created in October 2015 and is recognized as the first Chapter to submit a Memorandum of Understanding to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).  On a local level, the Miami-Dade UESI Chapter provides support and educational opportunities for professionals and students in the diverse field of utilities and surveying. The chapter regularly hosts lunch and learns, virtual technical sessions, site visits, networking events, and special-topic outreach campaigns on political or community issues of interest.

Our Mission

Our OBJECTIVES

  • Provide a national and international forum for exchange of technical and professional ideas.

  • Identify and disseminate developing technologies and research.
